Frequently Asked Questions
Bruce Miller

    Instructor Contact and Availability

I can answer questions, provide assistance, and discuss grades, etc. before or after class. (preparing for class takes precedence)

I will respond as quickly as I can to your e-mail inquiries. My e-mail address appears on the Microcomputer Applications 1 homepage.

I am available regularly for assistance during supervised labs. Supervised lab times vary from semester to semester.

    Attendance

Perfect attendance is essential to achieving maximum benefit in the course and highly recommended.

Two or more unexcused absences may result in grading penalties (see Grading Criteria, Course Description).

If you know in advance that you will be absent from a class it is a good idea to let me know ahead of time.

    Talking during class

During lecture and demonstation, brief, discrete communication between students concerning the subject at hand is ok. Private discussions and running dialogues are disruptive to class and are not ok. Please do not make me embarrass you.

    Cellphones and texting

Ringing cellphones, phone conversations, texting, etc. are disruptive to class and labs. Please do not use cell or smartphones in the lab, and always have ring tone turned off during class or lab.

Food and drink in the lab

Food consumption of any kind is strictly prohibited in the lab. Food may be brought into the lab, but it must be in closed containers, kept at long tables (never stations), and never under any circumstances consummed in the lab.

Only beverages in closed containers may be stored and consumed in the lab, and only at long tables, never at or near computer workstations.

Beverages in the computer lab are a privilege - do not abuse.

    Finding assignments

The printed syllabus passed out during the first class lists all the course assignments and handouts. For further details, consult the online syllabus, which includes links to actual assignments and handouts.

Link to the online syllabus from your course's homepage:

Reduction of paper use is better than re-using and recycling, please print responsibly.

    Finding disk files for labs

Files required for labs will be placed in your personal folder as a subfolder of your class folder.

Class folders are on drive N:, which is named Shared (xx represents your initials):

    • (Shared) N:\1041_Monday\xx (Monday section)
    • (Shared) N:\1041_Wednesday\xx (Wednesday section)

Files are accessible from any network-enabled computer at the site.

Software and files and working at home

If you have Microsoft Office 2007/2010 at home there should be no problem completing lab assignments there.

Many lab exercises require data files; others build upon a previously completed exercise. You'll need a USB flash drive (memory stick) to backup and transport your files home and back.

    Labeling lab assignments

All lab assignments must be correctly labeled to receive credit.

      Name
Week # (Week assigned on syllabus)
Name of Application and Tutorial #
    Examples:
    Jane Doe
    Week 5
    Word 1-1
    Joe Buck
    Week 10
    Excel 2-4

    Grade sheet

An online grade sheet provides a full record of your completed work and general progress Look for the grade sheet link on your course home page and then look down the first column until you see the last four digits of your phone number. Follow across that row to view your grades.
