How to use the Disk Management Administrative tool to assign a drive designation to a USB memory stick when the device cannot be accessed in Windows Explorer.

Assign Drive Designation to USB Memory Stick

If you are unable to access a USB flash drive in Windows Explorer, it may be because the device has not been assigned a drive designation. The following steps tell how to use Disk Management to assign a drive letter to the device and make it accessible:

  1. Right-click My Computer, click on Manage
    or
    Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management
  2. In Computer Management, click on Disk Management
  3. Right click on the drive
  4. Click on Change Drive Letter and Path
  5. Specify a drive letter
