The landscape around Lake Willoughby is fairly dotted with ponds, large and small. On this ride I visited five ponds above and to the east of Lake Willoughby.
Long Pond / Newark Pond / Bald Hill Pond / Job's Pond / Island Pond
These ponds are very beautiful natural settings and are accessible by gravel road only. One way to approach them is to turn up Long Pond Road off Route 5A around Lake Willoughby.
Be forewarned: The "gravel" roads around these ponds are not the smooth, hard-packed gravel roads found elsewhere. These roads are sandy with lots of loose stuff and pockets of erosion to watch for.
I took these photos during a ride from Derby VT to Lake Willoughby, to Island Pond, and back to Derby. For a description of the entire ride, see Lake Willoughby
